Weybridge, Surrey. An old town on the site where, according to tradition, Julius Caesar crossed the Thames in 55 B.C., presumably near where the modern bridge stands.
During the Tudor period there was great royal activity here. Henry VIII built one residence, Oatlands, and purchased another, Ashley Park; both mansions are gone but the estates remain as entities, now residential areas. The old Manor House was the home of John Bradshaw, president of the judges who tried Charles I, and he is said to have signed the king's death warrant there.
The Church of St Mary is of Norman origin; the present tower dates from the 15th century.
Close by is Brooklands Cemetery, one of the most extensive in the world; several London parishes and communities have their own burial grounds here, and there is a special military graves section and war memorials to the fallen of both World Wars. There is also a simple but impressive memorial to the Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Second World War and who have no known graves.
Brooklands Motor Course was from 1907 to 1939 the scene of international and national races, record attempts, and test runs. It was the world's first banked motor-racing circuit. A section of the banking remains and a plaque commemorates past glories.
