Warlingham, Surrey. A pleasant and growing town separated by the Green Belt from the more built-up areas to the North. Its parish church is notable for two important ecclesiastical “firsts”. Here the new English prayer-book authorized by Edward VI was first used, its compiler, Archbishop Cranmer, attending the service. Four centuries later a service from the church was televised, the first ever to be seen on television in Britain. Although the church was restored and enlarged in 1894, it is basically l3th century and contains much that is old, including a 15th century, wall painting of St Christopher. The octagonal font is l5th century and three piscinas are medieval. Most of the glass is modern but there is one window from the 15th century.
