Torthorwald, Dumfries and Galloway, is a village lying 4 miles North East of Dumfries. William Paterson, founder of the Bank of England, was born here; so too was John Paton, the missionary to the New Hebrides. There is a memorial to Paton, formerly erected on a gable of his birthplace, which has been demolished, and now on a cairn near the village.

Vestiges of two Iron Age forms on the brow of the brae show two or three concentric trenches. Torthorwald Castle stands on a series of earthworks of early medieval date. The site was, from the mid-l3th century at least, a stronghold of the Kirkpatricks; in 1418, William de Carleil married the heiress, and most of the time thereafter, until about 1715, the tower was in Carlyle hands. The present sturdy barrel-vaulted remains seem to have been largely built by William. In 1544 Lord Carlyle looted the castle of all its contents in a raid against his sister-in-law; little six-year-old Elizabeth Carlyle, the heiress, was abducted from here in 1574 by her uncle, Michael Carlyle, and traded for years among rival branches of the family.

Torthorwald was erected a burgh of barony on the 23rd of December 1473.
