Tetbury, Gloucestershire, lies almost on the Wiltshire borders between Stroud and Malmesbury. A quiet little market town, it gains distinction from its mid-17th-century Town Hall, built up on three rows of pillars. It has a heritage of good l8th-century houses with its earlier Chipping Square reached by well-worn steps. In 1781 Francis Hiorne completed one of the best early Gothic Revival churches in the country. The interior is singular and rather Nonconformist in aspect with its typically l8th-century gallery and wooden supporting columns; box-pews, however, strike an Anglican note. The pinnacled tower with its lofty spire was rebuilt at the end of the last century. There are a number of interesting monuments from an earlier church.
Tetbury Upton, a village just to the North of the town, has an elegant l8th-century house set in parkland and some good stone houses.
To the South West on the A433 is Westonbirt with its 19th-century Italianate house built by Lewis Vulliamy, now a girls' school, but still set in its splendid park with beautiful gardens, terraces and fountains and an unrivalled collection of rare plants and shrubs. Beyond this on the west side of the road, partly in Wiltshire, is the Westonbirt Arboretum covering 116 acres, managed by the Forestry Commission. Started by Robert Slayner Holford in 1829, it is generally regarded as one of the finest collections of trees in the world. The seasonal colourings can be breathtaking, and azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons thrive.
