Teignmouth, Devon. Of South Devon's beautiful estuaries, the Teign is the most easily appreciated from the road, the least secluded by trees, and the only one, apart from the Tamar, crossed by a road bridge. Nor is it devious with creeks like the others, but broad and straightforward, brimming with boats when the tide is in, displaying mollusc-encrusted mud-banks at low tide. It looks particularly good from the bridge, and never better than from the club-house of the admirable Teignmouth golf course on the hill-top to the North, from near which the view is also splendid to the Dartmoor peaks of Hound Tor and Haytor, especially in the evening.
The nicest part of Teignmouth is certainly The Den, which is on the sea-front. The Church of St James (dating from 1820 except for its tower) is curious. With Exmouth, Teignmouth is said to be Devon's oldest resort, popular since the mid-18th century. It was a port that Frenchmen considered worth ravaging in 1340. In 1821 it shipped the Dartmoor granite for London Bridge and nowadays the ball-clay of world-renowned quality found near Kingsteignton (44 miles West). It also builds good boats.
