Tarvin, Cheshire, is beside the A51, the Roman Watling Street, and 5½ miles East of Chester. It is a small, old village that was of strategic importance in the Civil War when it was a garrison for the Parliamentary side. Where the A51 leaves for Tarporley stands the 14th century Perpendicular Church of St Andrew. It has a square tower and the doorway is decorated with angels and the parapet with gargoyles. There are grotesque figures on the north wall. Six dormer windows light the nave and chancel, and the south aisle has a fine roof. The screen is massive.
Duddon, 2½ miles to the South East, is a tiny village, with old farm-houses and black-and-white cottages.
