Street, Somerset. Here is Mill-field School and a village industrial-success story. In the early l820s young James Clark, an apprentice in his brother's sheepskin rug firm, had an idea that waste bits of sheepskin would make good slipper linings. In his spare time he cut them out and got local shoemakers to make the slippers. In 1825 he and his brother founded what became the largest shoe company in Britain, and Street, then a village, grew into a town.

Ivythorn Hill (National Trust), 1 mile South, has beautiful woods and there are fine views from it over Sedgemoor to the Quantocks and North past Glastonbury Tor to the Mendips. On this hill, at Marshall's Elm, 30 of Monmouth's followers were hanged in 1685. On its southern slopes is a fine Tudor manor house, once the country house of the Abbot of Glastonbury. The monument on the hill to the East was erected in the 19th century to Admiral Hood, who died in 1814.

Sharpham Park Farm, 1 miles North West of Street, was for a time in the 18th century the house of Henry Fielding, author of Tom Jones.
