Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire. Steeple Aston, North Aston and Middle Aston are three large villages on the west bank of the Cherwell. North Aston has great elms and a village green, while 1 mile south of Steeple Aston lies Rousham. Here, in peaceful seclusion, is a manorial village with wayside houses, a church and the great Rousham House. The house, built in 1635 by Sir Robert Dormer and used as a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War, was enlarged in 1738 by William Kent, who also surrounded it by a man-made landscape including Classical temples, cascades and statues in 30 wooded acres within a bend of the River Cherwell.
