Stanton Drew, Somerset. In a field just East of this village are three circles of massive upright stones, the highest of which is about 10 ft. thought to have been put there for religious reasons at roughly the same time as Avebury's, c. 1800 B.C. And a little South West, beside the churchyard, is a group of three huge stones called “the core”, of even more uncertain prehistoric purpose. The rectory, near the bridge over the River Chew, is basically medieval. The curious building a little further North is an old toll-house.
About 1½ mile North the hill called Maesknoll is a good place to see the Wansdyke, the great earth wall which once stretched from Portishead, on the Bristol Channel, to Salisbury Plain. It, also, is of uncertain origin, but the Romano-British certainly used it against the West Saxons and probably strengthened it.
Three miles West of here, Dundry's extraordinary pinnacle-heavy church tower was built by the Merchant Adventurers in 1484 as a seamark.
Some 1½ miles West of Stanton Drew, Chew Magna church has a very fine l5th-century tower and contains a monument to Sir John Hantville, who is supposed to have possessed super-human strength. His effigy's feet rest on a lion which contrives to look like a grief-stricken dog.
