Silverstone, Northamptonshire, Silverstone is an ancient village mentioned in the Domesday book of 1085 that today has a population of about 2,000.

In the Middle Ages the villagers traded timber cut down from the surrounding Whittlewood forest.

Today it is best known for the Silverstone Circuit, the home of the British Grand Prix, Formula 1 motor racing which it first hosted in 1948. The race rotated between Brands Hatch, Aintree and Silverstone for three decades but relocated permanently to Silverstone in 1987. Built on the site of a World War II aircraft base, the Silverstone track is half in Northamptonshire and half in Buckinghamshire. Nigel Mansell was a winner here.

Stay overnight the day before race day and beat the traffic jams!
