Salen, Argyll and Bute, is on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. Salen, which had a regularly calling steamer service, used to be passed through by many of the 19th century travellers who were taking the pilgrim route to the isle of Iona. Eastwards it looks across the narrow Sound of Mull to Morven, and to the North West is the ruin of Aros Castle, once a castle of the Lord of the Isles.
To the West across a 24 mile neck of land is Loch na Keal, a sea-loch on the West coast of the island. On the South shore of the loch is an impressive range of overhanging cliffs and caves at Gribun.
