Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. On the top of the cliffs are run-of-the-mill houses but down the ravine towards the shore is an old fishing village. There is a tangle of houses, cafés, shops and inns, many all too precariously perched on their rocky ledges and often connected by narrow passages or a flight of steps. The village is sought out by artists as well as holidaymakers. Many of the red-roofed cottages are done up in bright paint and flowers. The village is near the north end of a sweeping bay which extends from the cliffs of Ravenscar on the South to the jutting headland of Ness Point on the North. Inland stretches Fylingdales Moor. Strange things happen here. Every house used to have a hiding place for contraband in the 18th century. The bowsprit of a stranded ship once pierced the window of an inn. Rocks frequently, but cottages rarely, fall into the bay, yet erosion has claimed at least two rows of houses and a road in the last 200 years. It is not clear why it was named after the legendary outlaw, but it adds to the romance of the place. One story is that Robin Hood came here to get boats ready for an escape to the Continent. The old Fylingdales parish church, St Stephen's, rebuilt in 1822, is interesting for its box pews and three-decker pulpit.
