Ripley, North Yorkshire. One wide street and a small cobbled square make up the village remodelled by one of the Ingilbys of Ripley Castle in 1827 to resemble an Alsatian community. Bypassed by the Ripon-Harrogate road, Ripley offers motorists who stray from the main route an old church and a weeping cross, claimed to be the only one in the county, as well as the castle. All Saints had to be rebuilt after the River Nidd undercut its site in about 1395. A clerestory and upper part of the tower were added in the 16th century, and there have been 19th-century restorations, with much Victorian glass put in. Its oldest monument is a l4th-century effigy of Sir Thomas de Ingilby and wife with their children lining the sides of the chest. A stair turret climbs the tower and there is a priest's room above the south chapel. The weeping cross is in the churchyard, with shaft and head missing. What remains is the base with eight niches in which to kneel and repent. It may be 2nd-century. There are stocks in the square and the village cross. The castle is open on Sundays throughout the summer and the landscaped grounds with lake and walled garden are open on Saturdays as well. The 15th-century gatehouse leads into a courtyard where a tower from the original castle now joins a late-l8th-century hall. Both James I and Cromwell stayed here, the latter, it is said, watched throughout the night by Lady Ingilby armed with pistols. In the library you can see the foundation charter for Mount Grace Priory.
