Ribbesford, Worcestershire. One mile south of Bewdley on the banks of the Severn is the little village of Ribbesford, latterly much spoiled. Turreted and gabled Ribbesford House, once the home of the Beauchamps and the Actons. became the training centre for officers in General de Gaulle's Free French Forces between 1942 and 1944. The little village church was much restored in late Victorian times. It has, however, a trenchant Norman tympanum with a carving of a knight transfixing a fish with his sword. Members of the Quaker family of William Penn are buried near the east window. Although Ribbesford has been so suburbanized there are still lovely river and forest walks all around.
