Reeth, North Yorkshire. This was a market town in the 17th and 18th centuries, a lively centre for lead-miners in the 19th (the area once produced a large percentage of the national tonnage). Reeth today serves the holidaymakers in Swaledale. It is on the hillside where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale join. Beside Arkie Beck is a miller's house with small millstones set over the windows. High Row, the western border of what is perhaps the best green in this part of Yorkshire, is lined with l8th-century inns and shops. Walkers and motorists have many scenic routes to choose from. The road to Richmond has been described as the most beautiful in England. The road West from Reeth leads to some of the wildest country in the Dales. To the North West beyond Arkengarthdale is Tan Hill and England's highest inn.
The parish church stands across the valley at Grinton. People used to bear their dead on wicker biers over rough tracks to its churchyard from the far-flung corners of the parish, which before its subdivision stretched some 20 miles to the Westmorland border.
