Oare, Somerset. This village made famous by Blackmore's Lorna Doone, is in one of Exmoor's most beautiful valleys, which can best be seen by turning off the A39 in Culbone Wood and driving to Brendon. Badgworthy Water runs North from Malmsmead (1 mile West of Oare), where there is a nice old bridge and ford. Two stream-valleys opening into Badgworthy from the West — Lank Combe about 1½ miles up and Hoccombe Combe 2 miles — have between them most of the characteristics of Blackmore's Lorna Doone stronghold, and both are beautiful.
