Northleach, Gloucestershire, was one of the very prosperous wool towns of the Cotswolds, and its rich, lofty Perpendicular church is a worthy memorial of those days. There is a certain faded beauty about the twisting streets and green-swarded market place and a tranquil imperturbability that ignores the arterial traffic on the A40. There are some pleasant old houses which have also ignored the passing of time: 16th-century almshouses, timber-framed houses with overhangs, and a l7th-century manor house as well as a tall gabled grammar school.
Its main feature to encourage the motorist to stop is certainly its l5th-century parish church with its beautiful south porch. Here canopied niches shelter their ancient saints, centred by the Blessed Virgin Mary, while the upward thrust of the buttressed arch finds its apex in the carving of the Trinity. The vaulted roof rests on six rounded shafts with flowered capitals. The irrepressible humour of this robust period is caught in a grotesque of a cat fiddling to three rats. The nave with its tall clerestory was built by John Fortey. Near the chancel under the north arcade is a brass recording his death in 1458 showing him with his feet on a wool sack and sheep. There are many fine brasses worth close inspection. Nearly all show, by the richness of their clothing, the wealth of the burgher class of Northleach in the Middle Ages. To see the beauty of the battlemented tower and line of parapets and pinnacles at its best, the church should be seen from just outside the eastern boundaries of the town.
