New Cumnock, East Ayrshire. Another of Ayrshire's upland mining villages, New Cumnock, is 6miles South of Cumnock on the Kilmarnock—Dumfries road. Like other similar settlements, it is in two parts — “Bank” on the River Nith, separated by 400 yds from “Path Head” on the River Afton. This is, of course, the “sweet Afton” immortalized by Robert Burns, and it still flows gently through its glen, some 2 or 3 miles from the village.
