Mallaig, Highland. At the mainland end of the “Road to the Isles” lies Mallaig, which also marks the terminus of the West Highland railway, it is a convenient calling-place for Inner and Outer Hebrides steamers, and provides a motor boat link with parts of Knoydart by a route that crosses Loch Nevis to the North, where no road is available.
About 3 miles East of Mallaig rises the hill of Cara a'Ghobhair, whose summit commands a magnificent view of the whole length of Lochs Morar and Nevis and looks out over the Sound of Sleat to Skye and Rum.
Fishing is Mallaig's chief industry. There is a deep-freeze plant there and also lobster ponds, and the fleet is linked with markets through rail and road transport.
