Lytham and St Anne's, Lancashire. Of quite a different character from its larger neighbour Blackpool on the North, Lytham and St Anne's has a charm of its own. Some half-timbered buildings mingle pleasantly with a scene of peaceful parks and gardens, with their floral displays. A promenade borders l½ miles of coast along part of the town, and in one area encloses Lytham Green, with its old windmill on the lawns and the church steeple and houses behind. In all there are 6½ miles of sandy beaches and dunes. Ashton Gardens are a minute's walk from the busy little shopping centre, with tree-lined paths, water-course and bowling green. Lowther Garden has sweeping lawns and trees, with areas for bowls, tennis, putting and crazy golf. The Alpine Gardens with their little bridges are pleasant for gentle strolls. Fairhaven Lake offers sailing dinghies, rowing boats, motor boats and water skiing. There is also a separate boating lake, and a pool for children to paddle and sail model yachts. The Ribble Cruising Club has its headquarters on the promenade and organizes regattas and weekend races. The combined borough of St Anne's with Lytham has excellent golf links. The visitor can use four championship courses: the Royal Lytham and St Anne's, St Anne's Old Links, Fairhaven and Lytham Green Drive.
John Carr of York built Lytham Hall in c. 1760, incorporating part of an earlier house.
