Visit Lilleshall and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Lilleshall, Shropshire. This village is now famous because of the national athletics centre which has been established in the Hall. This is not open to the public, but Lilleshall Abbey, in the grounds of the Hall, is. The ruins are among the most impressive in Shropshire, a group of roofless walls in a lovely setting. The abbey is Norman, founded in 1148. The high west front is particularly grand and through it you can look down the whole length of the 228-ft abbey and through the graceful arch of the empty east window to the trees beyond.
The Church of St Michael is also Norman in part, with a simple Norman font and an unusual monument to two members of the Leveson family, who were given Lilleshall by Henry VIII on the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Sir Richard Leveson and his wife rest on shelves, he above in robes, she below in a shroud. He died in 1661 and she lived on for another 13 years.
The village also has a 70-ft obelisk, commemorating George Greville. Duke of Sutherland — for whom the Hall was built — who died in 1833.
