Leverburgh, Na h-Eileanan Siar (Western Isles), is a small town and fishing port on Harris, one of the islands in the Outer Hebrides. Leverburgh presents an interesting, remnant of Lord Leverhulme's efforts to put the “Long Island” on the world fishing map. After he had retired in understandable dudgeon from Lewis, he concentrated his efforts on the contiguous island of Harris. At Leverburgh, he endeavoured to set up a fishing port to trade with the Western world, and built houses to contain what he hoped would be the growing community. The old name of the village, “Obbe”, seemed to him brusquely mono-syllabic. At the suggestion of the islanders it was renamed Leverburgh. The name has stuck; so has the original condition of the little port at the head of Loch Obbe. There is an odd confusion of houses, some ancient, some relics of Leverhulme's hopes, some modern Swedish. The place has the remnants of activity in surroundings of considerable beauty, the beauty of Harris's western side.
