Leiston, Suffolk. There can hardly be a greater contrast than that between the monastic discipline which prevailed in the abbey, now the principal monastic monument to be seen in Suffolk, and Summerhill the experimental school founded close at hand by the educationalist A. S. Neill. The abbey, originally established on the Minsmere Marshes in 1182, was moved to its present site by Robert de Ufford in 1363. As one of the smaller religious houses it was bestowed by the King on his brother-in-law, the Duke of Suffolk, in 1537. For hundreds of years the church was used as a barn and the abbey precincts as a farm, until in 1918 it was restored as a House of Prayer by Ellen Wrightson. The Ministry of Public Building and Works assumed custody of the ruins in 1964. Built into the nave and north side of the cloister is a dwelling used as a retreat for the local diocese.
Leiston itself is a busy industrial town which stands near the coast. One of the Garretts who ran the Iron Works produced a famous portable steam engine and threshing machine. His bust may be seen in the church (fine 13th-century font), and three of his stove-pipe hats in the council chamber.
