Lamphey, Pembrokeshire. The Church of Tyfai, as some believe it to be, or of Fydd, saint of the Faith, lies in the region of Manorbier, Stackpole, and St Govan's Head. It has a neighbour, Hodgeston, that illustrates how near together the Welsh and English traditions stand in Dyfed. The church at Hodgeston is remarkable for its Decorated beauty; but Lamphey possesses, although in ruins, the prouder proof of its importance as one of the seven palaces of the Bishops of St David's. The West and East wings, dating respectively from 1250 and 1330, are joined by a gate of later design. The chapel has an outstanding window of Perpendicular craftsmanship, and the place is noted as the youthful home of Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex and favourite of Queen Elizabeth Tudor. Stackpole Court, not far from Bosherston, was a seat of the Earl of Cawdor. Its beautiful gardens and sea-cove may be visited during the week. Even more attractive for many is the small chapel wedged in the cliffs by St Govan's Head; it is now a l3th century structure, but still preserves the altar, bench, and other fitments hewn from stone, and the rock-cut cell that legend ascribes to a 5th century Cofen, perhaps the wife of a king, who chose to dwell here by the well, which in the 20th century preferred to run dry.
