Knowle, West Midlands. This small town, where much new housing has been built, lies almost on the perimeter of Solihull on the main Warwick road. The village centre remains remarkably unspoiled. Knowle has perhaps the best Perpendicular church in Warwickshire, built by Walter Cook and completed in 1402. Fourteen years later it became a collegiate church with 10 priests attached to it. This was due to the rapid rise of the guild which Cook had founded. The church has a handsome screen and carved choir-stalls all dating from the 15th century. On the pulpit may be seen a curious l7th century hourglass for timing sermons. Cook's beautiful guild house, with a timbered hall, stands just West of the churchyard.
Chester House in the High Street is a fine twin-gabled, timber-framed house of the 15th century.
A worthwhile ½ mile walk northwards out of Knowle leads to Grimshaw Hall, built about 1560. Its lovely leaded upper windows are set into overhanging gables with varied herringbone and lozenge timber designs. The house with its fine projecting porch has undergone little restoration and the oriel windows on brackets are just as they were when it was built.
