Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire. An agreeable starting point for explorations of the moors. It is just off the Pickering-Helmsley road and the main street climbs steeply towards the hills. On Vivers Hill behind the church are the sketchy remains of a Norman castle. The Black Swan Inn has a timber porch from 1634. In the building called Buckingham House near the top of the street, George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, a great wit and friend of Charles II who had fallen from favour, died after a fall while hunting.
