Islington, Greater London. A favourite place of residence in the 18th and early 19th centuries, as it is again today. Many streets and terraces built during its earlier prosperity have been attractively renovated.
The centre of the old part was Islington Green, near which is the picturesque Camden Passage, an alley noted for its market and antique shops. Canonbury Square, built c. 1800, is characteristic of late—Georgian Islington. The tall Canonbury Tower, now part of a theatre, was built c. 1595.
