Gigha, Island of, Argyll and Bute is one of the Inner Hebrides. It lies about 3 miles West of Kintyre, and is one of the most fertile of the islands, its name being properly interpreted as “Isle of God”. The island contains the garden of Achamore, created by the late Sir James Horlick and presented by him to the National Trust.
Achamore House, built in 1884, contains a collection of 18th century English furniture and works of art. The island, which is only 6miles long by l½ miles wide, can be reached by the Islay steamer from West Loch Tarbert, or by ferry from Tayinloan. There are attractive sandy beaches on the East coast. The island is also associated with the name of the Rev. Kenneth Macleod, its minister at the end of the 19th century and till the 1920s. He was a noted Gaelic scholar from whom Mrs Kennedy Fraser got much material for her famous Songs of the Hebrides.
