Ilkley, West Yorkshire. This spa in the moors gave Yorkshire its national anthem, “On Ilkia Moor baht 'at”, a ballad about the uselessness of it all, set to a hymn tune. The town is not like that, however. It is a lively tourist and shopping centre as well as a health resort. Situated on the Wharfe, a safe distance from the industrial grime of the Leeds—Bradford area, Ilkley is a favoured place of residence. On first glance it is thoroughly modern, its chief public buildings and hotels having been put up in the late 19th or early 20th century. There are some houses of earlier date, for example, the 16th-century Manor House or the 18th-century Box Tree Cottage. The spring waters here were found to have medicinal value in the 1840s and hydrotherapy was introduced. The older part of town is near the parish church, All Saints, which is Ilkley's most obvious link with the past. The south doorway here is 13th-century, enriched with mouldings and dogtooth carving. The tower is of the 15th century and much of the rest reflects the l9th-century restorations and alterations. There are three Anglo-Saxon cross shafts in the churchyard. Bronze Age carvings in considerable number have been found in the area and some cup-and-ring examples are exhibited in the gardens opposite the church. A popular walk from Ilkley leads west up the valley and up Heber's Ghyll to the Swastika Stone on the moor. It is the only one in Britain, and like other ancient markings, full of mystery. it may have been used in fire worship.
