Holt, Norfolk, the site of the famous Gresham's School founded by Sir Thomas Gresham who was born here in 1519, and who also founded the Royal Exchange in London. The school was founded in 1555 and one of its former buildings stands on the site of his manor house in the market place, where it was built in 1858 in Tudor style. The school moved out to Cromer Road in 1900 and the “Big School”, the chapel and the various houses form an interesting group.
The town itself has some pleasant buildings and a milestone recording the distances to many of the famous halls and houses of Norfolk. Attention should be drawn to the large and elaborate Home Place (1903-5) on the Cromer road, one of the most extraordinary private buildings in the county, now a convalescent home.
St Andrew's Church was destroyed by the fire which also destroyed much of the town centre in 1708. It was much restored by the Victorian architect Butterfield in 1864.
