Helmsdale, Highland. Here the road and the railway, which have been running more or less in company since Inverness, part company. The railway takes the long detour by Strath Ullie then over the moors by Forsinard and lonely Altnabreac to Georgemas Junction for Wick and Thurso. The road follows the coastline, with splendid views of cliff and ravine, the seemingly endless moors rolling inland to the heights of Morven and Scaraben.

The natural harbour now has some twenty seine-netting boats. It is overlooked from the South by ruined 15th century Helmsdale Castle, where in 1567 Isobel Sinclair poisoned the Earl and Countess of Sutherland so that her son the Earl of Caithness might succeed to the earldom of Sutherland; but he also drank the poison and perished with the Sutherlands. Helmsdale river is noted for its trout and salmon fishing; it is one of the great rivers of the North for the angler.
