Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Together with its higher neighbour, Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge illustrates the story of the Industrial Revolution in the narrow West Yorkshire valleys. And the illustration in this case is exceedingly picturesque. First there was Heptonstall, a village of stone weavers' cottages and crooked streets that grew up on a moorland ridge. There was a l5th-century church, dismantled in 1854 with the ruins of the tower, porch and double nave left standing in the churchyard next to its successor. An octagonal Wesleyan chapel was built in Northgate in 1764 and the l7th-century grammar school, lately an old people's club, was nearby. When the village was young, the weavers worked in their homes. With the coming of steam power, mills were set up lower down the valley and this was Hebden Bridge. Terraces of workers' cottages with a boss's house at the end of each row crowded on to the hillsides. These are often of several stories, the top ones entered from the upper level of the hill, the lower ones from below. A modern road, painfully steep, connects the two communities; the old packhorse track called the Buttress, was even steeper. The pine-clad Hardcastle Crags in a glen 3 miles North West provide a fine bit of rocky scenery and are sometimes known as “Little Switzerland”.
