Harleston, Norfolk, which is on the River Waveney, is an attractive small town close to the Suffolk border, with two market places, of which the older has many good Georgian houses. Not far from the disused station (1855) is Candler's House, an outstanding example of an early Georgian town house with seven bays and two stories. The Swan Hotel has parts which pre-date the Georgian period and a very decorative scroll-work sign, which projects from the façade. In the new market place is a Victorian clock tower (1873) and not far away the Corn Exchange, built in 1849. The Church of St John the Baptist dates from 1872 and is of no great interest.
