Hamsterley, County Durham. A thousand acres of Hamsterley Forest have been opened as a park, giving additional access to the most beautiful woodland in the county. The road, which is open to motorists but not to heavy coaches, crosses streams and is crowded with beauty-spots. There is a forest trail for children with a printed guide available to help them identify plants and animals. This State Forest contains conifers and broad-leaved trees and already has a popular picnic area at Bedburn. The village of Hamsterley overlooks Bedburn Beck. There is a restored l3th-century church to one side. Some carved medieval monuments have been built into the church walls. One mile North of Bedburn are The Castles, remains of a stone-walled British camp built after the Roman occupation. On the other side of the road by the church is a series of Anglo-Saxon or medieval fields stepping down the hillside.
