Halesowen, West Midlands, lies 4½ miles East of Stourbridge and 9 miles from Birmingham. It is an industrial town. The early 13th century remains of its Premonstratensian abbey, founded in 1218, are incorporated into the 19th century Manor Farm to the South of Manor Lane. The long wall surrounding the farm-house originally enclosed the cloister garth and has a l3th century coffin lid carved in relief with a Calvary. In a recess barely a foot and a half high is a l4th century effigy of a knight with crossed legs, holding the hilt of his sword. The large and impressive Norman Church of St John the Baptist is masked by later Perpendicular work and has an outer aisle built in the 1880s. The l5th century tower rises with its spire and three tiers of gabled lights from the centre of the nave, rather more to the west than the original Norman tower which collapsed. It rests on arches with huge piers, one of which contains a stairway. William Shenstone the poet is buried in the churchyard and has a monument dated 1763 in the north aisle of the church. The Leasowes was the home of the poet. He spent long years here and much money on beautifying the house. It is now pebble-dashed and serves as the club house of a golf course, where part of the old landscaping remains.
