Edith Weston, Rutland. From Ketton drive due West past Normanton Park about 3 miles to Edith Weston, charming, like nearly all Rutland villages. Edward the Confessor gave his wife, Queen Edith, this western part of the county. hence the name. It remained a royal manor until Henry I gave it to his chamberlain, William de Tankerville, who in turn gave it to the Norman abbey of St George de Boscherville. The abbey established a cell at Edith Weston where there were never more than two or three monks, and only one in 1357.
The village is built round a green, surrounded by thatched cottages, and it stands on a limestone plateau between the valleys of the Chater and the Gwash. The old rectory, West of the church, is dated 1626 and the hall is 1830-Tudor.
The church has an original late-Norman nave, with a north aisle added around 1190, and a south aisle added immediately afterwards. Changes were made in the 14th century and the tower was added in 1380. The chancel was rebuilt in 1865. The church possesses one of the oldest positively dated timepieces in England, known as the Commonwealth Clock. It is 300 years old and has recently been restored.
