Eastbourne, East Sussex, can produce records to support its claim to pre-eminence among the resorts of England in the matter of sunshine. It is another of those watering-places which became popular at the turn of the 19th century and during the Victorian era; it still is:

Although an old settlement, the town received a charter only in 1883.

A feature is the coastline to the west, dominated by some miles of chalk cliffs rising to 600 ft above the sea at Beachy Head, below which is the Beachy Head lighthouse, surrounded by the waters of the English Channel. Also prominent are the Seven Sisters, seven chalk cliffs. Walks along the top of the cliffs are exhilarating.

One of Eastbourne's oldest buildings, called Pilgrims, dates back to the early 12th century. Underground passages, said to be of monastic origin, link it to the late-l2th-century parish church, St Mary's, and to the Lamb Inn (1240).

Many fortifications were built along this coastline during the Napoleonic Wars, and two have been put to good use in the town. The present-day Redoubt is one such fort and it now houses a delightful model village, an aquarium, a grotto called the Blue Temple, and a sun lounge. The Wish Tower incorporates an old Martello tower, and here is housed the museum of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the first of its kind in England. Until 1937 this was the lifeboat station.

Outstanding among the parks and gardens of the town are Motcombe Gardens and the colourful Carpet Gardens, near the pier.

Four miles north of Eastbourne stands Polegate Windmill, built in 1817 and restored in 1967.
