Dalkeith, Midlothian. This growing town is much enlarged since the Second World War. It has also a fair measure of light industry and, because of its proximity to Edinburgh, a sizeable proportion of commuting population. The Corn Exchange, dated 1854, in the High Street was once the seat of one of the country's largest grain markets.

Dalkeith Palace (now occupied by a large computer-making concern), a property of the Duke of Buccleuch, incorporates remnants of a 12th-century castle and was largely rebuilt to designs by Sir John Vanburgh around 1700, for Anne, Duchess of Buccleuch and Monmouth the Duchess of Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel. Queen Victoria began her long period of devotion to Scotland by spending her first night in this country at Dalkeith Palace in 1842, as the guest of the then Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch. She came by sea to Granton, inspected Edinburgh, and then went on to Dalkeith.

St Nicholas parish church, in the High Street, is of great antiquity. The church was restored in 1852, except for the East apse, which is roofless.

Eskbank, the residential area South West of the town centre, consists largely of Victorian and Edwardian villas.
