Cumnor, Oxfordshire, is connected with one of the most intriguing puzzles in history, in 1560 Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, Queen Elizabeth's favourite, was found dead at the foot of the stairs at Cumnor Place. Did she fall? Was she pushed? No one will ever know, although it seemed at the time that Dudley wanted her out of the way in order to be free to sue for the Queen's hand. Old Cumnor Place is no more, but memories of the old story are still kept alive by the monuments in the old church. It shows work from many periods: originally Transitional, it has many features in the Decorated style. The tower is late 12th or early l3th century and the north arcade is Early English. Inside are a statue of Queen Elizabeth and some of Amy Robsart's letters. At the time of her death she was staying with Anthony Forster, a Dudley retainer, who owned Cumnor Place. He kneels by a magnificent canopied tomb, 1572, with his children and wife about him. There is also a good two-decker Jacobean pulpit and a l7th century spiral staircase leading to the belfry.
The village with its stone houses has a Cotswold atmosphere, and if you climb the hills to over 500 ft there are magnificent panoramic views of the spires of Oxford and of the Cotswold country.
