Cranleigh, Surrey. Cranleigh can lay claim to the first cottage hospital. It was founded in 1859 bya local surgeon named Napper, and Archdeacon Sapte, Rector of Cranleigh, and was set up in a cottage that had formerly been the vicarage. This building served the hospital needs for about 40 years, but since then several additions have been required.
A feature of Cranleigh are the Canadian maples lining the main street. These were planted by Canadian soldiers who were camped nearby during the First World War. They make a fine and unusual display in an English country town.
