Conisbrough, South Yorkshire. The great white circular keep of the Norman castle rises dramatically above surrounding greenery high over the River Don, with a little town at its feet. The keep is 90 ft high, 52 ft in diameter and has six massive buttresses 9 ft thick. It is the oldest and best of its kind in the country and is in the care of the Ministry of Public Building and Works. The castle was founded by the de Warennes and the surviving work was by Hameline Plantagenet, who married the last of the Warenne family and took his wife's name. He built an identical keep in Normandy. This one probably dates from 1185. A narrow barbican with two turns leads inside. The tiny chapel on the third floor, built into the buttress, was the setting for a scene in Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe. From the roof is a wide view of the coalfield.

On a lesser height in the hilly town is St Peter's Church which dates from Anglo-Saxon times, with substantial parts of it constructed at the same time as the castle. The chancel arch, west tower, aisle arcades (with deeply carved capitals) and south doorway are all 12th century. The most important church treasure is the extraordinary Norman tomb-chest or gravestone. It is decorated all over in patterns and figures, with remarkable scenes of a man battling a dragon, two mounted knights jousting, and Adam with Eve.
