Colwyn Bay, Conwy, received its charter of incorporation in 1934. Within thirty years it had grown from an obscure village into a town of more than 20,000 inhabitants. Between two separate villages, Old Colwyn and Llandrillo-yn-Rhos. the modern Colwyn Bay has developed into a 3 mile promenade continuing as far as Rhos-on-Sea. It is a busy holiday resort even in the winter months, for its climate is mild and its situation protects it from rain and wind. It is an entirely modern town with entirely modern resources that have succeeded in overcoming the perils of the approach to it over the headland of Penmaenrhos — so difficult in the old coaching days that it alarmed Dr Johnson and daunted even the intrepid traveller Thomas Pennant, who thought it more dangerous than the cliffs at Penmaenrnawr on the other side of the Great Orme. Rhos-on-Sea, at the East side of the Little Orme, brings you almost into Llandudno. Llysfaen, near at hand, is hilly and beautiful, but has three very large limestone quarries as its most distinguishing feature. Within easy reach are Abergele and Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, with their old churches and quiet old manor houses.
