Colne, Lancashire, is an old market town, with mixed industries. Beyond it is the moorland country of the Brontës. The Romans had a chain of forts in Lancashire, linked by military roads, and their road from Manchester ran through Colne and on to Yorkshire. The roads in this area, as in other parts of England, were used for centuries after the Romans left; they later carried the produce of hand-loom weaving. The Church of St Bartholomew has Perpendicular features (but was probably begun in an earlier period) and a 16th-century roof. There are monuments by Sir Robert Taylor. The town's museum includes collections of geographical, historical, geological and natural history material. Wycoller Hall, East of Colne and now in ruins, is the house that Charlotte Brontë made into Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre.
