Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, is 12 miles from Ludlow on the A4117, the other side of the Clee Hills. Although some have doubts about it, the inhabitants claim it as the birthplace of William Langland, author of the 14^th-century. Piers Plowman. A beautiful east window in the green sandstone Parish Church of St Mary is dedicated to the poet, showing Piers “dreaming his dreams”. The church is also notable for its wooden spire which, despite efforts to straighten it, still has a distinct twist. The main street has a quiet charm with its pavements at different heights, its row of pollarded trees and its mixture of mellowed timbered and Georgian houses. The most striking building, apart from the church, is the Talbot Hotel, built about 1560, once a coaching inn, with an old stone mounting block on its forecourt.
