Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. This is a mainly red-brick and gabled resort with huge sands. From the sea-front the view South West over Hinkley Point nuclear power station to the Quantocks is splendid. Stert Island, just South West, is part of the Bridgwater Bay Nature Reserve. One of the town's very few old buildings is its l5th-century church, curious for its leaning tower (the result of sand foundations), in which high winds make fierce noises, and remarkable for its early-l7th-century marble reredos designed by Inigo Jones and made by Grinling Gibbons. This was made for Whitehall Chapel; saved when that building was burned; passed on to Westminster Abbey; and saved from the junk heap for Burnham. The Roman Catholic church, built 1966, at the south end of the town is interestingly modern.

The golf course at Berrow, 1 mile North, preserves an area of dunes from the development which stretches North of it unbroken for nearly 4 miles to Brean Down peninsula. Berrow's little church is beautifully situated in the middle of the course.

A walk over Brean Down, National Trust protected, good for birds and with a small Iron Age fort, makes worthwhile the drive to it. In 1897, Marconi wireless messages were successfully transmitted from Lavernock Point on the Welsh coast, 9 miles away — at that time the longest distance over water that a wireless message had been sent.
