Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. Like so many of the Essex estuary towns Burnham-on-Crouch is noted as a yachting and boat-building centre and also for its oyster beds. Along the quay is a terrace of houses with, as its centre-piece, the White Hart Hotel. Nearer the sea is the headquarters of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club built in 1931. The High Street has a mixture of buildings including weather-boarded cottages, Georgian houses and examples of the Victorian period. Among the latter is the Clock Tower of 1877. Where the High Street broadens out was doubtless the site of the old market.
One mile north of the town itself is the Church of St Mary which overlooks the coast from its slightly elevated position. The exterior features battlements which may also be seen on the south porch, decorated with four stone coats of arms. The north porch is l6th-century and has a stepped gable. Inside the church the lack of divisions between the nave, chancel and aisles gives it an unusual appearance. The font is Norman and made of Purbeck marble, and a wall tablet reminds us of the Rev. Alexander Scott who was chaplain on H.M.S. Victory when Nelson was killed in battle.
