Brixham, Devon. The picturesque fishing port of Brixham lies on the broad sweep of Tor Bay, together with the resorts of Torquay and Paignton. In 1850 the port of Brixham had nearly 300 trawlers. The establishment of a cooperative has revitalized the fishing industry here, and an increasing number of boats work out of the port. Not many of its houses are individually pretty but they make a decidedly pretty general effect, rising in tiers around the harbour. Here in 1688 William of Orange first set foot on English soil and is said to have stated boldly, “Mine goot people, I mean you goot, I am here for your goot, for all your goots”; there is a statue of him. The fish market is fun. Off Mount Pleasant Road is a floodlit stalagmite and stalactite cave which, when discovered in 1858, contained bones of prehistoric humans, bears, hyenas, rhinoceros and other beasts. In Middle Street is a good museum with maritime emphasis. The Rev. Henry Lyle, early-l9th-century vicar of All Saints' Church in Higher Street, wrote several well-known hymns, including “Abide with Me”, and the church's fine carillon does him regular honour. A nice short walk West of the harbour is over a bushy cliff-top hill called Battery, which gives grand views of the bay and of the prettiest of the nearby beaches, Fishcombe. Even better views are from Berry Head, 1 mile East, where there is a lighthouse, Napoleonic War forts and a quay. A vanished earthwork may have marked the site of a Celtic-Roman trading port.
