Bosham, Sussex. The most westerly town in Sussex, where, so legend has it, King Cnut demonstrated that even he, King of England, Norway and Denmark, had not the power to order the sea to turn back, which his courtiers, acting strangely unlike their usual Anglo-Saxon or Viking selves, had claimed for him.
It was from here in 1064 that Harold set sail on the journey that led to his meeting with William of Normandy - the occasion on which he is said to have been tricked into sacred promises that were to prove so fateful for the English at Hastings. His departure for Normandy is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.
The Church of the Holy Trinity was originally Anglo-Saxon and shows traces of pre-Norman work, including a chancel arch. Note a magnificent octagonal font, Norman columns and much from the 13th and 14th centuries. Among the tombs is one that contains the remains of a daughter of King Cnut, and another that was long believed to be that of Herbert of Bosham, secretary to St Thomas Becket, who saw the murder of the archbishop; but this is now doubted.
