Borgue, Dumfries and Galloway, is a pleasant old village near the centre of a green, fertile, mainly low-lying parish that occupies the area between the mouth of the Dee and the mouth of Fleet Bay. It has two ancient churchyards, Kirkanders or Kirkandrews, and Senwick, both fragmentary.

Little Ross Lighthouse is on an island off the South East end of the parish; the mainly rocky coast has several Iron Age and early medieval promontory forts, “Borness Batteries” being the chief of these; but the outstanding coastal structure is the “Borgue”, from which the parish takes its name. This massive castle-like Iron Age stronghold — in form hall-way between a galleried dun and a broch — stands on the shore of Castle Ha'en, a natural boat-berth; rock-cut steps lead out of a fine postern gate to the water. Ruinous, it was partly but carefully rebuilt in 1906, on the considerable height of wall found beneath the pile of rubble. Although probably built before A.D. 100, it was reoccupied in Viking times (the 1906 finds were mainly Viking), and its Norse name of Borg, meaning fortress, indicates its importance at that time.

Only 1 mile away is “Larry's Isle”, a small island off the coast, one of the Isles of Fleet, on which a stone church of the Northumbrian period, probably about AD. 800, has been found; it was preceded by a timber oratory and succeeded by a laird's hall of the 13th century. It has yielded various fine Dark Age crosses and an inscription of the Northumbrian period.
