Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, is part of the London commuter belt and has a population of 30,000. The town is often associated with the nearby village of Elstree, both sharing a local council, Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, and a railway station, Elstree & Borehamwood railway station.
The town is well served by transport infrastucture to facilitate its status as a dormitory town:
- the railway station is served by trains running to St Pancras (London) and Nottingham
- the A1 passes just to the east of the town
- the M25 passes about two miles north of it
Since the 1920s, the town has been the location of several film studios which produced well-known films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Where Eagles Dare, Goodbye Mister Chips, Moby Dick, The Dambusters, the first three Indiana Jones films and the first three Star Wars movies. Most of these studios have now closed, although two remain.
